Carbon fibre-filled

Plastics mixed with tiny carbon fibres for extra stiffness, light weight, and a premium matte finish.

Carbon fibre-filled filaments are ordinary plastics, such as PLA, PETG, or nylon, mixed with very short carbon fibres. The fibres make parts stiffer and lighter and give a sleek matte finish that hides layer lines.

What Carbon fibre-filled is good at

  • Stiff: Resists bending much better than the same plastic without fibres.
  • Lightweight: Great where weight matters, like drones and RC vehicles.
  • Dimensionally stable: Less warping, so parts hold their size well.
  • Premium look: A matte, textured finish that hides layer lines.

Where it falls short

  • Can be more brittle: Added stiffness often means less give, so they may snap rather than bend.
  • Not like solid carbon fibre: These are short chopped fibres, not the woven sheets used in bikes and aircraft.
  • Specialized equipment: The fibres wear out normal nozzles, so shops need hardened parts.

Is Carbon fibre-filled right for my project?

It's usually a good fit if your item:

  • must stay stiff and not bend
  • should be light
  • benefits from a clean, matte finish

If toughness matters more than stiffness, plain nylon or PETG may be better.

Common questions

Which base plastic should I choose? PLA-CF is easiest and cheapest, PETG-CF adds toughness and heat resistance, and nylon-CF (PA-CF) is the strongest and most heat resistant.

Is carbon fibre filament stronger? It's stiffer. Whether it's stronger depends on the direction of force and the base plastic. Your shop can advise.
