MDF is made from wood fibres pressed together with a binder. It's smooth, flat, and inexpensive, making it popular for painted projects and templates. This material is used for CNC routing and laser cutting and engraving rather than 3D printing, so it isn't included in the Material Suggester.

What MDF is good at

  • Very affordable: One of the cheapest sheet materials.
  • Smooth surface: Paints beautifully.
  • Consistent: No grain or knots.

Where it falls short

  • Swells with water: Not for damp or outdoor use.
  • Heavy and less strong: Weaker than plywood.

Is MDF right for my project?

It's usually a good fit if your item:

  • will be painted
  • is indoors
  • needs to be low cost

For a natural wood look, choose wood or plywood.

Common questions

Is MDF safe to laser cut? Yes, when shops use proper ventilation and filtering. Finished pieces are fine to handle.
