Castable resin isn't meant to be the final product. The printed pattern is surrounded by plaster-like investment and heated in a kiln, where the resin burns away cleanly. Molten metal is then poured into the empty space. This is called lost-wax or investment casting, and it's how many custom rings and pendants are made.
What Castable resin is good at
- Detailed metal pieces: Turns a detailed digital design into gold, silver, brass, or bronze.
- Clean burnout: Leaves little or no ash behind.
Where it falls short
- Two-step process: Printing plus casting, which usually involves a jeweller or casting service.
- Not an end-use plastic: The printed pattern itself isn't meant to be used.
Is Castable resin right for my project?
It's usually a good fit if your item:
- is jewellery or a small metal piece
- needs detail that's hard to carve by hand
Look for shops that offer both resin printing and mould making and casting.
Common questions
Can a 3D print shop make my ring in gold or silver? Some shops cast in-house; others print the pattern and work with a casting partner. Ask when requesting a quote.
