Resin printing uses a liquid that hardens when exposed to light, building your part in extremely thin layers. Standard resin is the everyday version: it captures detail that filament printing can't match and gives smooth surfaces that are ready to paint. Like all resin prints, parts are washed and cured under UV light after printing. Uncured resin is a skin irritant, but properly cured finished parts are safe to handle.
What Standard resin is good at
- Incredible detail: Tiny features, textures, and text come out sharp.
- Smooth surfaces: Layer lines are barely visible.
- Paints beautifully: Great base for primers and fine painting.
Where it falls short
- Brittle: It can chip or snap if dropped or stressed.
- Heat and sunlight: Softens with heat and becomes more brittle over time in sunlight.
- Size and cost: Large resin parts cost more than the same part in PLA.
Is Standard resin right for my project?
It's usually a good fit if your item:
- needs fine detail or a smooth finish
- is mainly for display
- is small to medium in size
For tougher resin parts, ask about tough resin. For large or practical parts, PLA or PETG usually cost less.
Common questions
Resin or filament (FDM)? Resin gives much finer detail and smoother surfaces. Filament is usually cheaper, tougher, and better for large or practical parts.
Can resin prints go outside? Standard resin isn't a good fit for outdoors. Sunlight makes it brittle over time.
