Specialty PLA

PLA with special looks: shiny silk, soft matte, real wood fibres, metal powder, or glow-in-the-dark. Chosen for appearance, not strength.

Specialty PLA is PLA mixed with pigments, fibres, or powders to change how it looks and feels. It's the go-to choice when appearance matters more than strength.

What Specialty PLA is good at

  • Silk PLA: A glossy, shimmering finish that looks metallic or pearl-like. Popular for vases and gifts.
  • Matte PLA: A soft, flat finish that hides layer lines well.
  • Wood-fill PLA: Contains real wood fibres. It can be sanded and stained, and even smells a little like wood.
  • Metal-fill PLA: Contains metal powder (such as copper, bronze, or steel), so it's heavy and can be polished to a metal shine.
  • Glow-in-the-dark PLA: Charges in light and glows afterward.
  • Multi-colour and rainbow PLA: Changes colour along the spool for a gradient effect.

Where it falls short

  • Weaker than standard PLA: Silk and wood-fill in particular have weaker layer bonds.
  • Heat and outdoors: Same limits as regular PLA.
  • Can cost more: Fills like metal and glow are abrasive and wear printer parts, so some shops charge extra.

Is Specialty PLA right for my project?

It's usually a good fit if your item:

  • is decorative
  • needs a special finish or effect
  • won't carry weight or take hard knocks

If it also needs strength, ask about PLA+ or PETG and add painting for the look.

Common questions

Is metal-fill PLA real metal? It contains real metal powder, but it's mostly plastic. It looks and feels metallic and can be polished, but it isn't as strong as solid metal.

Can wood-fill PLA be stained? Yes. It sands and takes wood stain, though results vary with the amount of wood in the filament.
