Many 3D prints need temporary supports under overhanging areas. Normally these are snapped off, which can leave marks. Soluble supports are made of a second material that dissolves, so they wash away and leave clean surfaces. You won't usually pick these yourself; your shop will suggest them if your design needs them.
How it works
- PVA: Dissolves in plain water. Usually paired with PLA or PETG.
- HIPS: Dissolves in a citrus-based solvent (limonene). Usually paired with ABS.
- Complex shapes: Allows internal channels, deep undercuts, and print-in-place moving parts.
Where it falls short
- Extra cost and time: Needs a printer that can use two materials, plus dissolving time.
- Not always needed: Simple designs rarely need them.
Is Support materials right for my project?
It's usually a good fit if your item:
- has complicated overhangs or hollow areas
- needs very clean surfaces everywhere
- has parts that must move freely right off the printer
If you're not sure, upload your file for a quote. The shop will tell you whether soluble supports are worth it.
Common questions
Do I need to ask for soluble supports? Usually not. Your print shop will recommend them if your design benefits.
Is PVA left in my finished part? No. It's dissolved away before the part is delivered.
