SLS printing

Industrial printing that fuses nylon powder with a laser, for strong, complex, production-quality parts.

Also called: Selective laser sintering

SLS printing uses a laser to fuse fine nylon powder layer by layer. The loose powder supports the part as it prints, so complex shapes, interlocking parts, and hollow designs need no supports.

Good for

  • End-use functional parts
  • Complex shapes and moving assemblies
  • Small production runs
  • Durable housings and clips

How it works

  1. You upload your file (often several parts at once).
  2. The shop packs parts into a build to use the machine efficiently.
  3. After printing and cooling, parts are dug out of the powder and bead-blasted clean.
  4. Optional dyeing (commonly black), smoothing, or painting.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Strong, durable parts
  • No supports, so almost any shape works
  • Great value for batches

Cons

  • Slightly grainy surface
  • Limited colours (usually white or grey, often dyed)
  • Longer lead times, since machines run full batches

Questions to ask the shop

  • Will my part be dyed or left natural?
  • How long is your batch cycle?
  • What's the price for different quantities?

Common materials

Nylon PA12 (SLS / MJF) · Nylon PA11 (SLS / MJF) · TPU powder (SLS / MJF)

Common questions

Is SLS good for just one part? It can be, but it's most cost-effective for multiple parts or complex shapes that other methods can't make.
